The Cyclicality of Immigrant Wages and Labour Market Flows: Evidence from Spain

Abstract This article studies the responses of real wages and labour market flows immigrants in Spain for period between 1999 2019. By using Labour Force Survey microdata, I examine cyclicality job-finding job-separation rates natives over long Spanish economic expansion sharp contraction. During expansion, 1999–2007, rate was higher than natives, but both converged to a lower level after Great Recession took place 2008. also find that impact crisis on more three times as high natives. longitudinal social security data, wage is natives: one percentage point increase unemployment associated with 0.61 0.85% drop immigrants, respectively. However, these differences only occur among low-tenure workers. study provides novel empirical evidence enrich macroeconomic theories interaction cycles immigration.
